Residency Research & Benefits

COVID-19 has significantly impacted our recruitment process for 2021.We are now offering multiple virtual informational sessions that will allow medical students to learn more about our program. Research

Research exposure is provided throughout the entirety of the residency experience. Residents have the opportunity to work with the faculty members at George Washington University, the National Cancer Institute and the Children’s National Medical Center on a variety of topics ranging from basic sciences to clinical/translational research.  The location in the nation’s capital also allows for the opportunity to work on health policy projects.

Conferences

  • Weekly Grand Rounds (Morbidity and Mortality Conference, GU Oncology Conference, guest lectures, resident lectures)
  • Weekly resident educational conference
  • Quarterly pediatric conference directed by the pediatric urology faculty (Residents and Faculty from George Washington, Georgetown and Walter Reed Urology programs attend these sessions)
  • Monthly Journal Club
  • Biannual laparoscopic and skills labs

Personal/Free Time

Life outside of residency is full of all that Washington, D.C. has to offer. There are 3 major international airports within 45 minutes and an Amtrak hub downtown, allowing easy access to any destination.  There are several major sporting teams in DC so you can enjoy professional sporting games all year round.  There is a fantastic nightlife and outdoor activities all year round with dozens of museums including the Smithsonian and the  internationally renowned Kennedy Center. There are dozens of parks and hikes within walking distance or a short metro ride from the hospital.  The Blue Ridge Mountains are only a one hour car ride away offering a plethora of outdoor activities.  Most residents live in Washington DC or Northern Virginia. 

Benefits

Residents are provided with three weeks of paid vacation a year and a salary commensurate with their PGY level.  Health/dental/vision insurance, retirement plans and other benefits such as disability insurance are available. As a member of the GW University staff, electronic access to a large database of medical journals and medical reference texts(including Campbell-Walsh Urology) is provided through the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library (https://himmelfarb.gwu.edu/) . The department provides support at various points during training for residents to attend the AUA Fundamentals of Urology course, the AUA Annual Meeting and the AUA Board Review Course.  Additional support is provided for residents to attend local and national meetings to present accepted research as approved by the department.
