GW Urology is a department with a proud history, a deep commitment to education, and an exciting future. Our mission is to train outstanding urologists who are clinically excellent, surgically skilled, intellectually curious, and prepared to lead in whatever path they choose — whether that is academic medicine, fellowship training, community practice, research, health system leadership, or advocacy.
Our residency program provides broad, hands-on training in the full scope of urology. Residents care for patients with common urologic conditions as well as complex tertiary and quaternary problems, gaining experience across endourology, oncology, GU trauma, reconstruction, female pelvic medicine, infertility, pediatrics, voiding dysfunction, and general urology. Training occurs at locations across Washington, D.C., with exposure to diverse patient populations, complex pathology, and multiple practice environments.
We believe that the best surgical training combines graduated autonomy, close mentorship, structured feedback, and a culture of accountability. From the beginning of
residency, our trainees are integrated into the clinical and operative life of the department. They work directly with engaged faculty who are committed to teaching,
technical development, clinical judgment, and professional growth. Our goal is not only to produce excellent surgeons, but also thoughtful physicians who understand how to care for patients with compassion, humility, and integrity.
Education is central to who we are. Our curriculum includes didactics, grand rounds, multidisciplinary conferences, journal clubs, simulation, surgical skills development,
research mentorship, and regular interaction with faculty across subspecialties. We expect our residents to ask questions, challenge assumptions, contribute to the
academic mission of the department, and develop habits of lifelong learning.
The setting of George Washington University offers unique opportunities. Located in the nation’s capital, our program sits at the intersection of academic medicine, public health, policy, research, and service. Residents benefit from proximity to major medical institutions, national organizations, governmental agencies, and research centers, while living and training in one of the most vibrant and diverse cities in the country.

Surgical training is demanding, and residents do their best work when they feel valued, challenged, and supported.
